After a period of volunteer work abroad and having started her second year of medicine, Hetty decided on a change of career. Believing that her social engagement could be better put to use in a creative manner, she studied photography for a year and was then accepted at the Netherlands Film Academy to study film directing. Here she found a perfect outlet for her storytelling passion. Her visually powerful films are a reflection of her dedication to social justice.
Hetty graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy as film director in 2015. Her graduation film, Nighthaven, won several prizes and screened at international film festivals. In 2017 she conceptualised and directed the television movie, Jungle, which was nominated for two 'Gouden Kalveren', taking home one of these in the category of best actor at the Netherlands Film Festival. Additionally, the film was well received at international level, being nominated for a Rockie Award, the Prix Europa and is the Dutch entry for the International Emmy Awards. Her most recent short film, Nothing to Declare, premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival in 2018 and is the official Dutch entry for the Oscars this year.
She is currently working on her debut feature film, Souls, written by Manon Uphoff and produced by Topkapi Films.
